Bates Offices Chelmsford, External Decoration of Crittall Windows and Metalwork

Overview

Anglia Decor was commissioned to carry out a full programme of exterior decoration at Bates Offices in Chelmsford, Essex. The scope of works included all Crittall windows, external woodwork, and metal staircases across the building. Crittall windows are a distinctive feature of many commercial and heritage buildings, and their slim steel frames require careful preparation and specialist protective coatings systems to prevent corrosion and maintain their appearance.

Preparation and Repairs

Full risk assessments and method statements were compiled before work commenced. Our decorators carried out thorough preparation of all external woodwork to identify areas of rot and timber decay. A separate quotation for prior-to-paint repairs was prepared and agreed with the client. All repairs were carried out using the RepairCare system, a two-part resin system that bonds to existing timber and provides a durable, long-lasting structural repair. All defective putties were removed and replaced.

Access and Coating Application

Anglia Decor hired a 21-metre and a 12-metre cherry picker to provide safe access across all elevations, saving the client the cost of a full scaffold installation. The project was carried out using the Dulux Weathershield system on all woodwork, providing an expected redecoration lifespan of approximately eight years. The Crittall windows and metal staircases were treated and decorated using appropriate metal primers and finishes to protect against corrosion.

Results

The expected redecoration lifespan is approximately 5–8 years, with south-facing elevations likely to require attention sooner due to UV exposure. The project was completed in five weeks. This project was featured in the PDA magazine The Decorator, recognising the quality of the workmanship. Anglia Decor returned to Bates Offices in April 2022 to carry out the same programme of works after seven years, confirming the longevity of the original decoration and the client's confidence in our workmanship.
