Diamond Grinding Contractros
Case study: Floor preparation at Arrival Ltd.
Our team of diamond grinding contractors prepared this 1000m2 previously painted floor using a planetary floor grinder.
We then vacuumed to remove all dust and filled the bolt holes and imperfections.
What is diamond grinding used for?
Vacuum assisted diamond grinding is used to remove old coatings, improving the level concrete floors and to prepare power floated concrete prior to application of epoxy resin coatings.
Can I just paint my floor without diamond grinding?
If floors are painted without diamond grinding the coating usually has poor adhesion and tends to debond from the floor within months. Then the floor requires frequent repainting, a tiresome job.
How long does it take to diamond grind concrete?
It depends of the concrete and if there are coatings or adhesive to remove.
Adhesive and coatings take longer to remove and slow the progress. Typically a man can grind 300-500m2 per day if it’s a bare concrete floor.
To remove a coating or adhesive can reduce this to 50-150m2 per day.
Can I grind the floor myself?
Yes, you could hire a diamond grinder and industrial vacuum and carry out the work. Also need to think about PPE, ear defenders, pp3 mask and gloves. Some grinders have time limits due to hand and arm vibration syndrome HAVS.

Vacublasting / shot blasting
This method uses steel abrasive propelled at high speed onto the floor to produce a desired profile.
There are different sizes of shot available, producing varied profiles.Â
Debris is collected in the vacuum unit and the shot recycled to be used again.
Magnetic sweepers are used to pick up any lost shot on the floor.

We carried out this 2000m2 floor at Edmonton in 2020 using vacu blasting and diamond grinding.
Scabbling
Scabbling is carried out using a machine with a rotating drum. Attachments or flails are attached to the drum which hit the floor to remove a certain profile depending on the flail. This method creates a lined profile and is mainly used to remove a depth from the substrate or to remove a defective section of floor. Once the area has been scabbled it can be grinded to flatten out the profile.
Benefits / uses:
To remove a defective area of concrete
To reduce a profile height of a floor
To create a lined textured appearance
Multi stripping
A blade is attached to the front of a stripping machine to remove floor coverings and latex. Ride on and push along machines are available. Once the coating has been removed it can then be diamond grinded or shot blasted to make ready for an epoxy resin coating.
Benefits / uses:
Quick removal of vinyl flooring

Frequently asked questions
It depends on the concrete. Always use with an industrial vacuum attached to keep dust levels down. Concrete dust is harmful to breath in and can cause silicosis.
Power
110v
petrol powered
3 phase powered
Planetary or single head.
planetary machines will leave less swirl marks in soft concrete.
Â
It depends if the size of the area, if coatings or glue require removal and the type of grinder used.
Large 3 phase powered grinders can get through larger areas in a day.
Soft concrete uses more diamond tooling and can be expensive.
It can be more effective to use a scabbler first to remove the high spot then use a diamond grinder after to flatten the profile.
This can also be used to level uneven joints between slabs.
This is best done using a pcd tool fitted to a grinder. It can leave scratches so needs to be diamond grinded after to improve the profile.Â
