What Coatings Are Used for Cladding Spraying?

Steve Massey 2026-06-06 3 min read

Cladding spraying uses high-build, flexible coatings designed to bond to weathered metal: polyurethane, fluoropolymer (PVDF-type) and elastomeric systems. Each is applied by airless spray over a compatible primer. The choice balances colour retention, flexibility and warranty length against the building's exposure and budget.

Common cladding spray systems

  • Polyurethane: tough, good value, strong all-round refurbishment finish
  • Fluoropolymer (PVDF-type): best colour and gloss retention, longest life
  • Elastomeric high-build: flexible, bridges fine cracks, seals cut edges

Why Are Specialist Coatings Needed?

Standard paint will not hold on weathered cladding. Original factory coatings are thick and tough: high-build PVC, the most common UK plastisol finish, is applied at around 200 microns and remains tough and damage-resistant [1]. A respray system must flex and adhere to that surface, not just sit on top of it.

How Is the Right Coating Chosen?

Coating selection follows exposure and expected lifespan. Coastal and industrial sites need higher-grade systems with better salt and UV resistance. Colour-critical buildings favour fluoropolymers for fade resistance. The substrate, whether plastisol, PVDF or polyester, also dictates the primer specified beneath the topcoat.

How Are These Coatings Applied?

Spray application is what gives an even, factory-like finish across profiled sheets. Cleaning, edge treatment, priming and topcoat all run in sequence, covered step by step in our guide to the on-site cladding spraying process, including drying times and weather conditions.
