How Is Cladding Sprayed On Site?

Steve Massey 2026-06-06 3 min read

Cladding is sprayed on site in four stages: inspection and cleaning, repair and edge treatment, masking and priming, then topcoat application by airless spray. The whole process happens in place, working across the elevation from access platforms, with the building remaining operational throughout.

Step One: How Is the Cladding Cleaned?

Cleaning comes first and decides the result. Operatives pressure-wash every panel to strip dirt, chalking and loose coating, then degrease where needed. A sprayed coating only bonds to a sound, clean surface, so this stage is never rushed.

Step Two: How Is Corrosion Treated?

Cut-edge corrosion and surface rust are treated before any topcoat goes on. Operatives wire-brush or abrade affected edges, then apply a corrosion-inhibiting primer. Treating edges properly is what stops rust bleeding back through the new finish within months.

Step Three: How Is the Coating Applied?

The coating is applied by airless spray for an even, factory-grade finish across profiled sheets. Windows, doors, signage and ground are masked first. Primer is sprayed, allowed to cure, then one or two topcoat passes follow, building the specified film thickness uniformly.

Which Coatings Are Sprayed On?

The topcoat is matched to the building's exposure and the original substrate. Options range from value polyurethane to long-life fluoropolymer systems, set out in our guide to the spray coatings used on metal cladding, including how each performs against UV and salt.

How Long Does the Job Take?

Most units are sprayed within days to a couple of weeks, depending on size, access and weather. Spraying needs dry conditions and surface temperatures above the coating's minimum, so the programme is planned around the forecast.
