ESD and Anti-Static Flooring Systems for Sensitive Service Environments
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is the sudden pulse of static electricity that transfers when a charged person or object contacts another surface. In an electronics manufacturing facility, a single discharge event of 20 to 30 volts can destroy a microchip. In a pharmaceutical clean room, static attracts airborne particulates onto sterile surfaces. In an ammunition or ordnance store, a spark from uncontrolled static can cause ignition. Anti-static flooring controls that risk by providing a continuous path for electrical charge to dissipate safely to earth through the floor system, preventing the build-up that leads to discharge events.
Two categories of anti-static resin flooring exist, and the distinction matters. Static dissipative floors have a surface resistance between 1 × 10⁶ and 1 × 10⁹ ohms , they slow the flow of charge to earth, preventing rapid discharge that could damage sensitive components. Conductive floors have a surface resistance below 1 × 10⁶ ohms , they move charge to earth quickly and are specified for environments where even a controlled discharge is unacceptable, such as explosive atmospheres and munitions handling. Both systems use carbon fibre additives or copper earthing tape embedded in the primer layer to create the conductive pathway through the resin to a designated earth point. Anglia Decor tests every installation with a calibrated surface resistance meter to verify compliance with BS 2050 and EN 1081 before handover.
Anti-static resin flooring systems are available as epoxy or polyurethane, in thicknesses from 1mm high-build coatings through to 4mm self-levelling screeds depending on the mechanical demands of the environment. Epoxy-based ESD systems suit dry, temperature-controlled spaces like server rooms and electronics assembly lines. Polyurethane-based ESD systems are specified where moisture, thermal cycling, or chemical exposure adds to the static control requirement , pharmaceutical production suites, chemical handling areas, and clean rooms with regular wash-down protocols. Colour options include standard RAL colours for zone demarcation: grey for general areas, yellow for ESD-protected zones, red for restricted access.

Anti-Static Floor Installation by ESD-Certified Contractors
Anti-static flooring installation requires specialist knowledge beyond standard resin flooring work. The conductive pathway through the floor must be continuous and unbroken from every point on the surface to the earth connection. Copper earthing tape is laid in a grid pattern across the prepared substrate, with each tape run connected to a designated earth point in the building's electrical system. The conductive primer is applied over the tape to establish the base resistance layer. If any section of tape is poorly bonded, overlapped incorrectly, or damaged during installation, that zone loses its ESD protection entirely. Anglia Decor's installers are trained in ESD flooring protocols and test continuity at every stage.
Surface preparation follows the same FeRFA standards as any resin installation , diamond grinding or shot blasting to remove existing coatings, open the concrete pore structure, and create a mechanical bond. Moisture testing is particularly critical for ESD floors because trapped moisture beneath the conductive layer creates resistance variation that compromises the system's electrical performance. Once the substrate is profiled and the copper tape grid is laid, the conductive primer goes down, followed by the body coat (1 to 4mm depending on specification) and a conductive seal coat. The entire system is tested zone by zone with a surface resistance meter to confirm readings within the specified range , 1 × 10⁶ to 1 × 10⁹ ohms for dissipative, below 1 × 10⁶ for conductive.
Anglia Decor has installed anti-static flooring in server rooms, data centres, electronics assembly plants, pharmaceutical production suites, hospital operating theatres, air traffic control centres, printing facilities, and Ministry of Defence ammunition stores. Each installation is documented with resistance test certificates that confirm compliance with BS 2050 and EN 1081. The floor is handed over with a full test report showing resistance values at every measured point, the earth connection locations, and the system specification. A properly installed and maintained ESD resin floor delivers 10 to 20 years of certified static protection.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is ESD flooring?
ESD (electrostatic dissipative) flooring is a resin system that safely dissipates static electricity to earth through a conductive pathway built into the floor. It prevents uncontrolled static discharge that can damage electronics, ignite explosive atmospheres, or contaminate clean room environments.
What is the difference between conductive and dissipative flooring?
Dissipative floors have surface resistance between 1 × 10⁶ and 1 × 10⁹ ohms and slow the flow of charge to prevent sudden discharge. Conductive floors have resistance below 1 × 10⁶ ohms and move charge to earth rapidly. Conductive systems are specified for explosive atmospheres and munitions; dissipative for electronics and data centres.
What industries need anti-static flooring?
Electronics manufacturing, data centres, server rooms, pharmaceutical clean rooms, hospital operating theatres, ammunition storage, air traffic control, chemical handling, and printing facilities. Any environment where uncontrolled static discharge could damage equipment, compromise sterility, or create an ignition risk.
What standards does anti-static flooring need to meet?
Anti-static resin flooring in the UK must comply with BS 2050 (specification for electrical resistance of conducting and antistatic products) and EN 1081 (determination of electrical resistance of resilient floor coverings). Anglia Decor tests every installation and provides resistance test certificates at handover.
How thick is anti-static flooring?
ESD resin systems range from 1mm high-build coatings for light-duty areas to 4mm self-levelling screeds for heavy-traffic environments. Thickness depends on the mechanical demands (foot traffic, trolleys, equipment) alongside the static control requirement. The conductive pathway performs identically across all thicknesses.
How long does anti-static flooring last?
A properly installed ESD resin floor lasts 10 to 20 years. Resistance values are stable throughout the floor's life when the conductive system is correctly installed and the surface is maintained with ESD-compatible cleaning products. Anglia Decor recommends annual resistance testing to confirm ongoing compliance.
